Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic and ageism: na integrative review

Abstract

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) from 2019 onwards changed human life in a continuous and significant way, and this phenomenon has been the subject of partial measurements and studies so far, due to the great diversity of possible approaches for analysis of the disease science. The objective of this study is to describe and analyze the discussions of scientific productions on ageism in the context of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and how the authors analyze the phenomenon. For this, regarding the methodology, this article is an integrative review of literature on ageism, ageism, in the Covid-19 pandemic, carried out between July 2020 and November 2021, in the Web of Science databases, MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Virtual Health Library, APA PsycInfo. After the identification, selection and eligibility phases, 21 articles were included for categorization. The development of this study followed the PRISMA recommendation - Key Items for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyzes. As for the results, the articles, in general, identify the growth of ageism in the pandemic, and highlight the harmful social and individual effect that this phenomenon causes. As for limitations, the experimental articles point out methodological and situational restrictions, due to the research difficulties imposed by the pandemic period itself, but emphasize the importance of more robust and continuous studies on the subject.
