Leadership in times of crisis: Reflections of COVID-19 and prospects from a gender perspective

Despite being very popular, the leadership topic presents a great diversity of theories and perspectives, but insufficient consensus and contextualization. Considering the context of COVID-19, the study of how leaders act in times of crisis is essential to understand the impacts brought by the pandemic crisis. In the midst of the leadership crisis and the examples of leadership during COVID-19, the issue of the leaders’ gender arises, accentuating the need to reframe the leadership concept and the culture that surrounds it. Therefore, the objective of this article is to carry out a theoretical-conceptual discussion of the leadership literature from a gender perspective, analyzing how COVID-19 consequences contribute to the questioning of the prevailing models of leadership and the concept’s reassessment. The performance of women in leadership during the coronavirus crisis and the phenomena that involve the exercise of female leadership are analyzed, discussing how the search for gender equity in positions of power contributes to prospects for the post-pandemic world.
